IT & the NHS
It's about people, not just technology
There are many reasons the National Programme for IT (NPfIT) in the NHS matters. One is that, at £12.4bn, it is costing about £2bn more than the total build cost for the Channel Tunnel. Another is that it could improve the treatment of patients.

IT and the National ID card
About ID cards and the National Identity Scheme
Each ID card will be unique and will combine the cardholder’s biometric data with their checked and confirmed identity details, called a ‘biographical footprint’. These identity details and the biometrics will be stored on the National Identity Register (NIR). Basic identity information will also be held in a chip on the ID card itself.
U-turn cuts risks of ID card scheme
Out go plans for a purpose-built population database and proposals to record the iris patterns of 60 million people. And the timetable for the mass roll out of ID cards has been quietly moved from 2008 to 2010.
